On November 27, 2025, the University of Florence will host a significant academic workshop titled "Tokenizzazione: regole, progetti e prospettive" (Tokenization: Rules, Projects, and Prospects), focusing on the Italian and European regulatory framework governing digital tokens. The event, organised by BABEL under the PRIN2022 DeTOKoDE research project, will take place at 2:30 PM in Building D6, Room 1.18, at the Novoli campus on Via delle Pandette 9, Florence.
Leadership and Organisation
The workshop will be presided over by Professor Riccardo De Caria, Scientific Coordinator of the PRIN2022 DeTOKoDE project from the University of Turin. The opening introduction will be delivered by Professor Filippo Zatti, Scientific Director of the Florence research unit of PRIN2022 DeTOKoDE and member of the BABEL research team at the University of Florence. Ms Chiara Ferri manages the organisational secretariat at the University of Camerino.
First Session: Tokenization - Regulatory Framework and Practical Applications
The first session will be moderated by Professor Rosa Giovanna Barresi from the School of Economics and Management at the University of Florence, also affiliated with the BABEL research team.
The session features distinguished presentations on cutting-edge regulatory challenges:
Maria-Teresa Paracampo (University of Bari Aldo Moro) will address "Tokenization as a Regulatory Challenge: Fungibility and Multi-Issuance of Stablecoins under the MiCA Regulation." This presentation will explore how the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation addresses the complex issues of stablecoin fungibility and multiple issuances in the digital asset ecosystem.
Francesca Mattassoglio (University of Milano-Bicocca, member of the Milan research unit PRIN2022 DeTOKoDE) will present on "The Digital Euro: Tokenization of Money and Innovation in Payment Systems." Her contribution will examine how the digital euro project represents a fundamental transformation in monetary tokenization and its implications for modernizing payment infrastructure.
Gian Luca Greco (University of Milan) will discuss "The Tokenization of Financial Assets," providing insights into how traditional financial instruments are being transformed through blockchain technology and the regulatory implications of this evolution.
Allegra Canepa (University of Milan) will explore another dimension of financial asset tokenization, offering additional perspectives on the legal and economic framework governing these innovative instruments. She will present "Beyond Tokenization: A Legal-Economic Framework for Meme Coins," examining meme coins from both legal and economic perspectives and addressing their place in the broader digital asset landscape.
Salvatore Luciano Furnari (University of Rome Tor Vergata) will conclude the first session with "Models and Architectures of Tokenization: Evidence from the Italian Context," offering empirical insights into how tokenisation is implemented and adopted in Italy's unique regulatory and market environment.
Second Session: Round Table on Challenges and Opportunities of Tokenization for Economic Development
The second session takes the form of a round table discussion, moderated by Marcello Bussi, editor of the Milano Finanza Newsletter CryptoManiac, bringing a practical financial journalism perspective to the academic discussions.
This session brings together key stakeholders from regulatory bodies, financial institutions, and the blockchain industry:
Francesca Maria D'Annibale from CONSOB (Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa), Italy's securities market regulator, will provide regulatory insights.
Rossella Pascale from the Bank of Italy (Banca d'Italia) will offer the central banking perspective on tokenization and its implications for monetary policy and financial stability.
From the private sector and blockchain industry, the round table will feature:
Thomas Mauro Iacchetti from Fleap, representing innovative fintech solutions in the tokenization space.
Marco Laurenti from Conio, one of Italy's leading cryptocurrency platforms, is bringing practical industry experience.
Alessandro Brigato from TokNox by BlockchainItalia.io, representing blockchain technology implementation and infrastructure development in Italy.
Significance and Context
This workshop represents a crucial gathering of academic researchers, regulatory authorities, and industry practitioners at a pivotal moment in the development of digital asset regulation. The PRIN2022 DeTOKoDE project (with research units spanning Turin, Florence, Milan) is addressing fundamental questions about how tokenization challenges traditional legal and economic frameworks.
The timing is particularly significant as Europe implements the MiCA regulation and Italy develops its national approach to digital assets. The workshop's comprehensive agenda—covering everything from central bank digital currencies to meme coins, from regulatory frameworks to practical implementation—reflects the multifaceted nature of the tokenization revolution and its profound implications for the future of finance, law, and economic development.
