ELDA — Economics and Law of Digital Assets

BABEL's continuing education course on the economic and legal dimensions of blockchain, digital assets and the digital economy. Delivered entirely online across three editions from 2021, it was designed for professionals, students and newcomers without a prior background in computer science or cryptography. Certificates of participation and completion were notarised on the Algorand blockchain and issued as verifiable digital credentials — fitting, for a programme about digital trust.

ELDA trained lawyers, economists, managers, technologists and public officials, who continue to engage with the unit's themes as the ELDA Alumni network. The course is not currently running.

Research prizes

BABEL–FISAC/CGIL Prize for research on the digital economy and financial legality

A multi-year prize programme established with the National Department for Legality and Anti-Money Laundering of FISAC/CGIL, the trade union federation for workers in banking, insurance and financial services. It supports student research at the intersection of the two organisations' concerns: cash and electronic money, traceable payment systems and anti-money laundering, the digital euro, banking consolidation, and insurance fraud and suspicious transaction reporting.

The programme is embedded in the economic law courses taught within four master's degree programmes of the School of Economics and Management — Economics and Development, Finance and Risk Management, Accounting, Auditing e Controllo, and Economics, Institutions and Sustainability — as an optional research track in the first semester. Students write a research paper of fifteen to twenty pages, in English or Italian, in place of the standard course project, under the supervision of Filippo Zatti. Papers are peer-reviewed among participants and then assessed by a committee composed of the supervisor, a BABEL researcher and a FISAC expert, on relevance, methodological rigour, originality, quality of analysis and clarity.

Three prizes are awarded each year, of €1,500, €1,000 and €500. Beyond the award, the programme offers support towards publication, the opportunity to present at the BABEL Conference, co-authorship opportunities and letters of recommendation.

The prize takes the form of a restricted-purpose donation to the Department of Economics and Management: it is not a sponsorship, and confers no influence over teaching or research content. The first edition opens with the academic year 2026/27, under a programme regulation adopted in May 2026.

 

Research assistantships

The Regulatory Architecture of the Digital Euro: Legal Design, Governance, and Economic Implications of the Emerging EU Framework

Within the research assistantship scheme of the MSc in Economics and Development, which awards 6 ECTS to students working alongside a member of the teaching staff, an assistantship supervised by Filippo Zatti is currently underway on the regulatory architecture of the digital euro. Running from July to December 2026, the activity follows the legislative file through the trilogue negotiations between the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission.
